Got Carpal Tunnel? Why You Need to Stretch Your Shoulders

CrossFit training with wall ball

If you are struggling with numbness, tingling, or burning in your hand, your immediate instinct is probably to stretch your wrist or wear a brace. However, the real culprit behind your carpal tunnel symptoms might actually be sitting much higher up: in your shoulder.

The median nerve, which is the nerve responsible for carpal tunnel pain, originates in your neck. It travels down through your shoulder, under your collarbone, and down your arm before reaching your hand. When you spend hours hunching over a computer or steering wheel, your shoulders roll forward. This slouched posture compresses the tissues around the nerve pathway. By “opening” the shoulder, you relieve this upstream tension, which instantly reduces the pressure on the nerve before it even reaches your wrist.

To target this area and find relief, perform 10 to 15 reps of this simple shoulder opener.
